The 30-year-old scored four against Eibar on Tuesday night as Barca eased to a 6-1 victory to move to 302 goals at the Camp Nou, but the goals also helped the star to beat his previous record goal tally after five league games.
Before Tuesday night's heroics, the most Messi had ever scored in the first five league games of a new season was six, but the Agentine has now smashed that record after moving to nine for the season so far against Eibar.
There has been a steady improvement in Messi's early-season form throughout his career. In the 2006/07 season, he scored two in his first five games, whilst in 2007/08 and 2008/08 that number rose to four.
The 2009/10 season against saw an improvement, with Messi scoring five, a total which he matched the following season. The 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons was Messi set his previous record with six, though he has been somewhat off the boil these past two seasons, socring just three.
He's more than making up for that this term though, with his goal tally in La Liga putting him out in front alongside Monaco's Radamel Falcao as the top scorer in any of Europe's top five divisions, though Juventus forward Paulo Dybala is breathing down their neck with eight.
If we include Messi's goals in other competitions, his tally for the season quickly rises to 12 in just eight games.
In reality, Messi's nine-goal haul in La Liga has come in just three games, with the Argentine having drawn a blank against Real Betis and Getafe. The 30-year-old instead plundered his goals aginst Alaves (2), Espanyol (3) and Eibar (4).
Can Messi keep up his incredible form? Could he be on course to match of even beat his 73-goal season of 2011/12?
