The brawl kicked off when a derogatory comment was aimed at Ibrahimovic from a member of City's coaching staff. This did not go down fell for the former Real Madrid manager, who reacted in fury and demanded respect from their rivals, sparkling a brawl between up 30 players and staff.

Insults and punches were traded after Mourinho pushed Ederson away, prompting United players to retaliate when their manager was hit on the head by a bottle. As revealed by the 'Daily Mail', the Red Devils initially though the City goalkeeper was the culprit but the bottle reportedly came from the dressing room behind.

As the likes of Kompany and Fernandinho defended their team-mate, Marcos Rojo, Antonio Valencia, Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Alex Tuanzebe and Ander Herrera joined in defence of Mourinho, who was not only struck by a bottle but was also doused in milk as someone threw a one-pint carton in his direction.

Romelu Lukaku was also accused of throwing a water bottle in the opposite direction, while City coach Mikel Arteta suffered a cut to his forehead which eventually needed four stitches.

The fall-out from the extraordinary altercation continued with the FA formally asking both clubs to give their observations. They have until 6pm on Wednesday to respond.
