The two Roma supporters who carried out the shocking incident before their side's Champions League semi-final first leg against Liverpool have been charged with violent conduct by the police.
The victim, Sean Cox, continues to be in critical condition and a 'GoFundMe' page has been subsequently set up to help with his medical bills.
In the first eight hours, 788 people donated a combined €15,287 (£13,345), raising the initial target from €10,000 to €20,000.
Its creator, Emmet Kavanagh - an administrator of the Irish Liverpool Reds page on Facebook - explained his reasoning behind setting up the page.
"I decided to set up this page to help raise funds to cover Sean's medical expenses and expenses incurred by his family to help them to stay by his side," Kavanagh wrote.
"I have been in contact with a family member and they are aware that we are raising money. Once the money is raised I plan on withdrawing it by cheque/bank draft and presenting it to either Sean and/or his family."
