In swinging in the corner for Roberto Firmino to head home Liverpool's fifth of the night, Milner achieved something never before done in the history of the Europe's premier club competition, recording double-figure assists in a single campaign.
Given the greats that have featured in the competition it is incredible to believe that the record belongs to Milner and not Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Andres Iniesta, Neymar, Raul, Francesco Totti or any other of a thousand world stars to have graced the Champions League.
On the other hand, it also goes to show the value of consistency, hard work and unerring delivery both from open play and dead-balls.
Following and injury to Emre Can, Milner has stepped into Liverpool's engine room with ease, forming an effective dynamic alongside skipper Jordan Henderson.
However, there is nothing new about Milner's ability. His willingness to sacrifice himself for his side and make lung-bursting runs form box-to-box all game long is well established, as is his apparent lack of desire for personal accolades.
Whilst Milner is a player that will seldom catch the eye, he is the perfect example of the sort of player every side needs in order to be greater than the sum of its parts.
For Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp has found the ideal man hustle, harry and get the ball forward to his devastating attacking trio as soon as possible, without ever leaving the back door open and Milner deserves just as much credit as the German for making the role his own.
