Ernesto Valverde's side went into Saturday's league fixture with Leganes knowing that either a win or a draw would equal Real Sociedad's 38-game unbeaten run in 1979-80, and they were determined to do it in style.
'Los Cules' wasted no time putting their stamp on the game, dominating possession early on but they lacked the decisive finish up top. Until their talisman, Lionel Messi, fired himself to the forefront.
After being taken out from behind, the Argentine forward stepped up to take the free-kick. It was a great decision as he curled his effort inside the right-hand post to gift his team the lead.

Messi would then double Barcelona's advantage just six minutes later. Philippe Coutinho found his teammate in the box with a pin-point pass who then finished off the move with a cool finish, slotting it comfortably under Ivan Cuellar to net his 28th of the season in La Liga.
The two goals in quick succession understandably shook the visitors but they used the half-time break to fire themselves up for the second 45 minutes - determined not to go down without a fight.
An early change saw Claudio Beauvue replace Nordin Amrabat and the substitute was instantly involved in the play as his diving header went inches over the crossbar.
However, Leganes would be rewarded for their spirit in the 68th minute when a beautiful side pass found Nabil El Zahr in tonnes of space. The forward had no trouble cutting his shot across the face of goal to beat Marc-Andre Ter Stegen and pull a goal back for the visitors.
Despite their best efforts though, Barcelona would kill the game off at the death through star man Messi. He scored his third of the night by dinking the ball over Cuellar, after Leganes failed to cut out the through ball from Ousmane Dembele, to secure a 3-1 victory for 'Los Cules'.
The win means they draw level with Sociedad's unbeaten record and will now look forward to their next league match against Valencia on April 14 as they attempt to break it.
