Messi continues to establish a goalscoring record that will be very hard to ever equal. It seems difficult to believe that anyone will ever beat the 73 goals that he managed to score in 60 games in the 2011/12 season.
The Barcelona forward has once again reached the 40 goal mark this season, and it would be a major shock if he doesn't continue to add to that tally before the season draws to a close. This is the ninth consecutive season that Messi has hit the 40 mark, a feat that very few can boast.
It all began in the 2009/10 season. Messi had scored 38 in the previous season, and he raised his level in 09/10, reaching 47 goals by the end of the season. He continued to better himself over the next few years, managing 52 in 2010/11, before hitting his peak the following year.
After the incredible 73-goal season of 2011/12, Leo continued to provide impressive goal stats to his side over the following seasons, scoring 60 in 12/13, 41 in 13/14, 58 in 14/15, 41 in 15/16 and 54 last season, according to data from ProFootballDB.
This season Messi has been more of a creator than in previous years, playing in a deeper position in Ernesto Valverde's system, however against Sevilla he once again hit the 40 mark. It's no easy feat reaching 40 at the age of 30.
