Morata joined Chelsea for a club-record fee of £70 million last summer. After shining at the beginning of the season the Spaniard unfortunately suffered a back injury that kept him out of action. He has since fallen out of favour at Stamford Bridge and has struggled to get minutes on the pitch.
Last week, Julein Lopetegui announced his provisional squad for Spain's upcoming friendlies and there were a number of significant absentees. The ex-Madrid man, along with teammate Cesc Fabregas and Sergio Busquets, found himself snubbed.
"Alvaro wasn't happy," said Marcos Alonso, who was elated to discover he had earned his first international call-up.
"He has gone through a difficult few months with a back injury. He is now 100 per cent and the other day he scored," Alonso added.
Morata can find comfort in the fact that the recent Spain squad is by no means final. The striker still has time to put his name on the radar and will be desperate to do so.
