The 30-year-old was surprisingly left out of Belgium's provisional World Cup squad on Monday morning, with roberto Martinez later moving to confirm that the decision was a tactical one.
However, the snub proved too much for the Roma star as he took to Instagram to announce his retirement from international duty.
Nainggolan has made 29 appearances for his country since making his debut back in 2009, scoring six goals and was part of the side that was defeated by Wales in the quarter-finals of Euro 2016.
This is not the first time the former Cagliari man has called time o his international career, having previously done so last year after being dropped for Belgium's World Cup qualifiers, but whilst he returned on that occasion, it appears that there will be no such reprieve this time.
"Very reluctantly my international career comes to an end...I’ve always done everthing I could to represent my country. Being yourself can be bothering ...From this day on I will be the first fan..." he wrote on social media.
