West Ham were hoping that the England striker could avoid surgery, instead using a protective boot to rehabilitate the injury, but after seeing another specialist on Monday the decision was taken to opt for surgery which will see Carroll sidelined for three months.
The injury comes as a devastating blow for David Moyes and the goalscorer, who had finally found his shooting boots again in said fixture against West Brom, scoring twice.
It comes following speculation that Chelsea were interested in securing the player's services. Initially, the 'Blues' wanted to bring Carroll in on loan, but were prepared to offer a permanent deal in the region of £20m after the 'Hammers' had rejected the proposal, with Michy Batshuayi going in the opposite direction on loan.
The injury-prone 29-year-old has made 100 appearances for the London club, discounting his season spent on loan there, and scored 25 times, since joining from Liverpool in 2013.
