Jose Mourinho and Manchester United were knocked out of the Champions League by Sevilla after the Spanish side played a near-perfect game.
The United coach will not progress to the semi-finals once again. The last time Mourinho guided a team into the Champions semi-finals was Chelsea in 2013-2014. That time, similar to the Sevilla defeat, the club went into half-time 0-0, but fell in the second-half on home-ground.
The following year, Mourinho's second year at Chelsea for the 2014-2015 season, the 'Blues' were knocked out of the last-16 by Paris Saint-Germain. After the 1-1 first leg, Chelsea could not score at Stamford Bridge and were dropped from the Champions League.
Mourinho was unable to complete the 2015-2016 season after being dismissed by Chelsea. He arrived at Manchester United in the summer of 2016.
Although their group stage was impeccable, Sevilla twice crossed paths with Manchester United and bettered them in both games, but only achieved victory in the second.
With both of Mourinho's Champions League victories seemingly too long ago, it seems that the Portuguese's formula for success has been exhausted. Others, like Guardiola, have managed to reinvent themselves. Will he be able to do the same?
